Program Notes

“In early 2020, Maestro Boris Brott asked me to compose an orchestral work for the National Academy Orchestra of Canada. Unfortunately, those plans were put on hold when the COVID-19 Pandemic made safe live orchestral performances unfeasible. I was honoured to play in and compose for the orchestra during its online season, but we all greatly missed the experience of performing together. While discussing the new work, our wonderful orchestra manager Megan Jones suggested that I write an opening piece to celebrate the orchestra's first public performance after the pandemic. I immediately agreed.

Solidarity commemorates the National Academy Orchestra's return to live performances. No matter how isolated I've felt in the last year, I've always found some solace in the universality of our situation. I don't have to ask my colleagues if they've missed performing together to know that they're feeling the same way that I am. While turbulence is an unavoidable part of life, so is community. I hope that this piece serves as a reminder that no challenge is unconquerable when we have each other.”
